Can CBD Help with Dog Seizures?

Watching your dog have a seizure can be scary and devastating. As many as 1 in 20 dogs will experience a seizure in their lifetime. If your pet has chronic recurring seizures, this may indicate that they have Epilepsy.

Unfortunately, pet medications for seizures, such as Phenobarbital (PB), K-BroVet Potassium Bromide (KBr), and Primidone, only help in 70-80% of cases, and they can carry some harsh side effects including liver damage, lethargy, weight gain, personality changes, decreased white blood cell count, and thrombocytes (blood clotting), as well as thyroid and hormonal changes.

Can CBD help your dog with seizures and canine epilepsy?  Let’s explore…

What is a Seizure?

A seizure is a neurological condition that is popularly referred to as a convulsion. It is a distortion in the brain, a shift from the normal activity which affects the muscles and makes them uncontrollable by the individual who is affected.

Seizures can happen to humans, dogs, or any living animal. For many dog owners, it has been a cause of worry, fear, and anxiety. It sometimes feels worse in animals since you can’t actually hear what they say, you can only see their movements.

If you are not present at the time of a seizure in your dog, it could also be fatal.

Epilepsy is a continual occurrence of seizures in your dog. This means that the seizures may continue to happen especially if your dog is suffering from other illnesses such as kidney problems, liver diseases, and head injuries.

What are the Types of Dog Seizures?

There are different types of canine seizures that your dog can experience including:

Grand Mal Seizures

Grand Mal seizures are what most people associate with seizures. Symptoms can include falling, convulsions and twitching, loss of muscle control, and involuntary urination or defecation. Grand Mal seizures may last only a few seconds or up to several minutes.

Focal Seizures:

This type of seizure only affects one side of the brain. It could eventually spread to the other part of the brain and still make your dog exhibit the same characteristics. Symptoms may include involuntary jerking of limbs or repetitive facial movements.

Psychomotor Seizures

This type of seizure is difficult to detect, you may think that your dog is only having some fun when in reality, it may be struggling with brain inactivity. Your dog may only be hyperactive or aggressive for a short time, or they may express some uncommon behavior such as motionless staring, or hallucinatory behavior.

Symptoms of Dog Seizures to Recognize

Since dogs do not have the ability to communicate what is going on, owners of dogs with epilepsy must be vigilant and check for some of these symptoms of seizures:

  • Becoming stiff
  • Losing consciousness
  • Chewing its own tongue
  • Drooling
  • Foaming from the mouth
  • Unconsciously urinating or defecating

What To Do If Your Dog Is Having a Seizure

If you do notice some of these behaviors and suspect your dog may be having an epileptic seizure, you should remain calm and follow the steps below to comfort your pet:

  • Speak to your pet in a soft, calming tone
  • Assert light pressure on your pet’s eyes which may help decrease seizure duration
  • Protect your pet from injury and prevent their head from hitting nearby objects
  • Be careful not to move your pet or approach their head or mouth as they may bite
  • Do not punish your pet if they urinate or defecate indoors during a seizure
  • Seek emergency help if a seizure lasts more than several minutes or if a second seizure immediately occurs before they have recovered

What are Some Triggers for Seizures in Dogs?

It is difficult to know what particular triggers may cause seizures in dogs. However, you should be on the lookout if your dog has recently exhibited any of the signs or symptoms above and note any possible triggers listed below:

  • Kidney or liver disease: if your dog is currently battling or recently recovered from kidney or liver disease, it is possible that seizures will occur.
  • High blood sugar or low blood sugar: extremely high blood sugar or extremely low blood sugar can greatly affect the brain which can cause seizures.
  • Traumatic head injury: whether recent or past, head injuries could pose a threat to your dog which may be the culprit for seizures.

Other possible causes of seizures may include:

  • Genetics (hereditary)
  • Anemia
  • Vascular disease
  • Poisoning
  • Tumors
  • Stroke
  • Infection

Can CBD Oil Help with Canine Seizures?

As stated above, many of the drugs for canine epilepsy have serious side effects. Many pet parents seek a safe and natural alternative treatment for relieving your dog’s seizures without side effects.

What is CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound extracted from the cannabis plant. CBD has been shown to provide numerous health benefits including relieving discomfort, reducing inflammation, promoting relaxation, and a wide range of other benefits with little to no side effects.

CBD has been used by many pet owners to help aging pets, those with physical, mental, or behavioral conditions, and as a way to promote good overall health. Many pet owners have reported that CBD has greatly improved their pet’s quality of life.

In your dog’s body, there are endocannabinoid receptors that interact with cannabinoids introduced into the body. These include CB1 receptors found in the neural system and CB2 receptors found in the immune system. The neuroprotective property of cannabinoids is what makes CBD oil so beneficial.

How to Give Your Dog CBD?

The options for giving your pet CBD are plentiful. The most common (and tastiest!) method is in the form of CBD Dog Treats.  Tessera Naturals CBD Dog Treats are made from organically grown USA hemp and contain 2mgs of CBD per treat with no THC. They have a delicious beef flavor that all dogs love.  Cats love them too! CBD dog treats are a safe, convenient, and fun way for pets to enjoy the benefits of CBD.

For larger dogs (60+ lbs), it may be more practical (and more cost-effective) to use our CBD tinctures or softgel capsules.

NOTE: If you give your pet CBD oil using tinctures, it’s best to stick with “natural” flavor.  Some essential oils, such as peppermint oil, may be toxic to some dogs.

Tinctures can be applied directly into the back of the animal’s mouth or under their lip, or the appropriate dosage can be dropped into their regular food, or mixed with a tasty treat like peanut butter.

In addition, cats will lick CBD oil off of their paws when it is applied there, which is a good non-intrusive method to get CBD into their system.

If your pet is on prescription medications, we advise that you check with your veterinarian before giving them CBD.

What to Look for When Buying CBD Oil for Dogs With Seizures

CBD for Psoriasis: Can CBD Help Curb Your Symptoms?

CBD has risen to fame in recent years, especially with the windfall of new research to support its therapeutic potential. Unlike its psychoactive cousin THC, CBD does not produce the intoxicating effects typically associated with marijuana. Many people around the globe use CBD for a variety of conditions such as pain, anxiety, and insomnia, but can CBD be used as an effective treatment for psoriasis symptoms?

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin disorder that causes skin cells to multiply faster than normal, leading to a buildup of cells on the surface of the skin. This results in bumpy dry red patches covered with itchy white or silvery scales. The rash can grow anywhere on the body, but is most prevalent on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

Psoriasis is thought to be an auto-immune system deficiency, where the immune system causes too many skin cells to develop, which then builds up on the surface before they are mature. Furthermore, the National Psoriasis Foundation says that up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis can develop psoriatic arthritis, which leads to stiff and inflamed joints.

Conventional Treatments for Psoriasis

There is currently no cure for psoriasis, but the right treatment can help people manage their symptoms and quality of life. Treatment for psoriasis typically aims to remove scales and stop skin cells from growing so quickly.

Triggers for psoriasis flare-ups can include infections, stress, and cold temperatures. Therefore, alleviating the symptoms of psoriasis can sometimes be promoted on our own with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, moderate exposure to the sun, as well as minimizing stress as much as possible.

Taking special care of the skin is also a method to reduce outbreaks. Using gentle soaps and lotions and occasional oil baths can be beneficial. Regular application of natural topical products such as butters and oils that support skin renewal and restoration can greatly help psoriasis sufferers.

For more serious cases, medical intervention may be necessary. Many dermatologists will prescribe corticosteroids, which are very powerful anti-inflammatory drugs, but long-term use can unfortunately cause very serious negative effects in the skin and body.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol.  CBD is a natural plant-based compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD is only one of 100+ cannabinoids found in cannabis that all offer their individual benefits. When consumed together, CBD and other minor cannabinoids can be a powerhouse treatment for various health conditions.

CBD oil interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is comprised of a series of cannabinoid receptors throughout our bodies that produce their own cannabinoids which help regulate many of the functions that retain our physical and mental well-being.

CBD oil helps our ECS promote homeostasis and brings balance between bodily functions by reducing inflammation, regulating pain, and promoting a more relaxed demeanor. The ECS also plays a fundamental role in maintaining the health of the skin.

What is a CBD Salve?

Herbal salves have been around for thousands of years. A salve is essentially an ointment, cream, or balm that you apply to your skin for its healing properties.

Salves are extremely versatile and multi-purpose products especially beneficial for the treatment of easing symptoms such as rashes, dry patches, scrapes, wounds and other minor skin mishaps.

Salves are made with a combination of waxes and oils to produce a semi-solid consistency. Salves do not contain any liquid, so they tend to remain thick and stable, and do not need to be refrigerated.

Jars of salve on wooden table. CBD cream for psoriasis. cbd salve for psoriasis. cbd for inflammation. cbd for skin.

Coconut oil is a popular base for salves as it contains saturated fats that help keep the skin moist. Beeswax or other waxes are commonly used to bind salves together and give it a more solid consistency. The more wax that is added, the stiffer the salve, which is good for products such as deodorants or lip balms.

Many salves are infused with various herbs, essential oils, and plant-based medicinals to enhance their healing properties. For example, Tessera Naturals CBD salve includes Lavender, which helps promote relaxation, and is also great for healing burns, bites, rashes, as well as relieving muscle and joint pain.

What the Research Says on Using CBD for Psoriasis

CBD research is still in its infancy, but there has been an increasing amount of studies recently on the effects of CBD for skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. The exact nature of how CBD works to help treat psoriasis remains unknown, but the results are showing promise.

A 2007 study by Nottingham University found that cannabinoids are anti-inflammatory and have inhibitory effects on the proliferation of a number of tumorigenic cell lines and that cannabinoids inhibit keratinocyte proliferation, which therefore supports a potential role for cannabinoids in the treatment of psoriasis.

A study in 2009 from the  University of South Carolina found that some cannabinoids found in cannabis may help regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation, which is the main cause of psoriasis outbreaks.

More recently in 2019, researchers in Italy showed that applying topical CBD-enriched ointment on psoriatic skin did help to reduce psoriasis symptoms.

While CBD has not been proven to cure psoriasis, it can be used as a natural treatment or as a complement to other therapies for easing psoriasis symptoms. If you do decide to give CBD a try for psoriasis, we advise choosing a test site and check for irritation or allergic reactions before applying to larger areas of the body.

More research is definitely needed to study the effects of CBD for psoriasis, so we advise speaking with your dermatologist before altering any treatment course you’re currently on.

Most importantly, psoriasis sufferers should only purchase products from reputable brands and sellers. Always ask for a certificate of analysis (COA), which confirms the potency of cannabinoids in the product as well as ensuring there are no harsh chemicals or other contaminants.

Tessera Naturals is a leader in the CBD industry and has always focused on improving the health and wellness of our customers.  We pride ourselves on our strict manufacturing processes and will always strive for excellence in everything we do.

Does CBD Cause Liver Damage? Why You Shouldn’t Worry

The market for CBD products has seen significant growth in recent years and there’s no sign of slowing down as more and more people are discovering the amazon benefits of this miracle plant compound. While the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile, a 2019 study on liver damage in Mice apparently caused by CBD has stirred up some controversy. In this article, we discuss whether there is a connection with CBD and liver damage.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol and comes from the cannabis plant. In order for CBD to have little to no THC, and not cause any intoxicating effects, it must be extracted from hemp, which is a different variety of cannabis than traditional marijuana.

CBD oil can be beneficial for everything from getting a better night’s sleep, to post recovery after a workout, to de-stressing after a hectic day. Since there are so many benefits, a lot of people simply consume CBD oil as part of their general wellness routine to promote overall balance in their body and mind.

The Mouse Study Results on CBD and Liver Damage

Researchers from the University of Arkansas set out to investigate the effects of CBD on the livers of 8 week old mice. The mice tolerated the CBD just fine for the most part, but when given extremely high doses, the results showed signs of liver toxicity.

The researchers repeated the treatment with smaller doses of CBD and found that there were still signs of swelling and damage to the liver.

The study concluded that “CBD exhibited clear signs of hepatotoxicity, possibly of a cholestatic nature. The involvement of numerous pathways associated with lipid and xenobiotic metabolism raises serious concerns about potential drug interactions as well as the safety of CBD.”

The bottom line outcome from the study is that taking too much CBD might lead to liver damage in high enough quantities.

Should You Worry About CBD and Liver Damage?

While the FDA has yet to implement any regulations around CBD and other hemp derived products, more and more people are relying on CBD than ever before as part of their health and wellness regimen. It’s no secret that CBD oil is making a huge impact on many peoples’ lives.

Like any health product though, you should be aware of potential adverse side effects and possible dangers of ingesting anything new into your body. That being said, there are many other medications and herbal supplements that may also cause liver damage in high quantities. So you need to be aware of the proper dosage for any health product you are taking to understand how much is too much.

Many experts have weighed in on the mouse study and its flaws. The main problem with this study is that the initial dose chosen for the investigation was equivalent to 20 mgs of CBD per kg of body weight, which is analogous to those used in clinical trials for the FDA-approved CBD epilepsy drug, Epidiolex.  This dose would be equal to a 150 pound human taking over 1300 mgs of CBD!

To put that into perspective, the typical dose of CBD oil users is somewhere in the range of 10 to 80 mgs per day, with slightly higher doses for therapeutic issues or “flare-ups”.  As we can see, this study does not mimic the typical usage patterns of most CBD consumers.

The study itself states that their dosages “is not applicable to most real-life scenarios”, but goes on to say that “it does provide critical information regarding the potential consequences of CBD overdose.”

The report further states that “No measurable toxicological responses associated with liver injury were observed in mice gavaged with CBD at 184.5 mg/kg (MED of 15 mg/kg CBD) or lower” and also says that “no significant changes in any of these parameters were observed at lower CBD doses.”

To use another example, we would never expect anyone to suggest taking 100x, 50x or even 20x the recommended dose of Ibuprofen, or any other over-the-counter medication.  Most people would scoff at any study that would use those levels to look for potential liver damage.

So Are There Any Dangerous Side Effects of CBD?

While you should not be concerned with liver damage for using CBD, that does not necessarily mean that there are no adverse side effects or dangers when consuming CBD.  As stated above, the WHO regards CBD as generally safe and well tolerated by humans, but there are some precautions one should take, just like with any other health product.

Again, dosage is the main determining factor for any side effects of CBD, and while most people report no side effects whatsoever, some who have taken higher doses have reported minor issues such as diarrhea, changes in appetite, fatigue, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting.

One point of concern that some may need to be cognizant of is that CBD may interact with certain prescription medications. Our liver has a group of enzymes called cytochrome P450, which breaks down specific drugs into smaller bits to allow our cells to absorb them better and eliminate them properly. Even though the effects have been shown to be minimal, CBD can inhibit the CYP450 system’s ability to metabolize certain pharmaceutical drugs.

man sitting on couch with headache. cbd liver. cbd bad for liver. cbd dangerous for liver

If you are taking any prescription medications, we advise that you speak with your doctor before consuming CBD.  Many conventional doctors do not know much about CBD since it’s not taught in medical school, so it may be best to ask them if any of the drugs you’re taking are affected by eating grapefruits, since grapefruit also affects the same liver functionality.

How the Wrong Dosage Can Promote CBD Liver Damage?

Like everything else in life, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Just as taking too much Ibuprofen or Tylenol could have catastrophic effects, care should be taken when introducing CBD.  But how much is too much?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to CBD dosing.  Many factors lead to the varying doses required for different individuals. Weight, diet, metabolism, sleep patterns, lifestyle and genetics all play a part in determining CBD efficacy.

So, how much CBD oil should you take? Well, it depends… As a starting point, we suggest a low dose of 10-15mg and see how you react. Then you can slowly increase the dose over time to land on the most effective dose for your goals.

Use our free interactive CBD Dosage Calculator to determine your staging point based on weight, condition and severity.

As stated earlier, most people stick to somewhere in the 10-80mg of CBD per day, but each individual is different, so it will take some experimentation to find the right dosage for you. If you’re trying CBD for the first time, we suggest you read our Beginner’s Guide to CBD.

Does Quality of CBD Matter When Considering Side Effects?

Hands holding two softgel capsules. broad spectrum cbd. buy cbd softgels.

Just like any other health product or supplement, quality matters. If you’re a high performance athlete, would you pick up some random protein powder sold at a gas station convenience store? Similarly, if you’re into health and wellness and looking for a quality herbal supplement, would you try an unknown brand you see on the shelf at a local vape shop?

CBD is no different. While there are many companies producing and selling CBD, you may not always get what you’re expecting. Even the CBD products on Amazon are not legitimate CBD products.

Unfortunately, the recent explosion in the CBD market has brought out plenty of snake oil salesmen who are just trying to capitalize on the “hot new trend” by putting out mass-produced, low quality, and possibly unsafe products.

As savvy consumers who really care about wellness, it’s important to be more educated about what to look for when buying CBD.

What To Look For When Purchasing High Quality CBD Products

Tessera Naturals has been at the forefront of the CBD movement and has built a reputation for high-quality products and excellent customer service. Tessera Naturals products are made with the utmost care, which you should expect from any product you are introducing into your body.

Some of the advantages that sets us apart include:

  • All Tessera Naturals products are made from all-natural organically grown USA hemp.
  • All Tessera Naturals CBD oil is extracted using CO2 for a clean solvent-free extract.
  • All Tessera Naturals products are broad spectrum CBD profile, which means they are THC free.
  • All Tessera Naturals products are non-GMO, free of pesticides or harsh chemicals.

Lastly, any time you purchase CBD, you should make sure the company can provide 3rd party lab tests to verify the potency and safety of their product. Due to the unregulated nature of CBD, many products on the market are either mislabeled in terms of CBD content, THC content, or they do not adhere to the strict quality standards you should expect in a premium product.

Key Takeaways

  • CBD can be beneficial for a variety of health conditions
  • Using CBD in moderation is generally safe and well tolerated by most
  • Extremely high levels of CBD may have potential to cause liver damage and other mild side effects, similar to any other herbal or medical supplement.
  • It will take some trial and error in order to determine the correct dose for each individual
  • It’s important to seek quality products from a reputable source in order to reap the benefits of CBD
  • Always buy from a trusted company who can provide 3rd party lab tests for their products.

CBD for Sciatica: What is Sciatica and How Can CBD Help Manage the Pain?

Sciatica is a painful condition that affects the nerve running from the lower back down through the legs. It has been connected to most of the clinically diagnosed cases of lower back and leg pain, and its lifetime incidence is believed to range from 13-40%. Can CBD be used as a natural alternative treatment to manage sciatica pain?

While sciatica isn’t always debilitating, it will affect a significant percentage of the population, and some sort of treatment method is usually necessary to manage the pain.

Numerous studies have suggested that CBD has a slew of therapeutic properties, many of which could be particularly useful in managing the pain that occurs with sciatica. Research into CBD’s role in alleviating neuropathic pain is still in its infancy, but this early evidence is encouraging enough to suggest that it may provide significant relief from sciatica with minimal side effects. In this article, we’re going to discuss all you need to know about CBD as it relates to treating sciatica.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition characterized by a sharp pain in the leg(s) and lower back that radiates down through the knee and sometimes into the feet. Sciatica typically only affects a single leg, and the pain is often accompanied by weakness, numbness, and tingling.

Most commonly, sciatica pain is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve due to a bulging or herniated disk, but it can also arise due to inflammation, physical trauma, or the growth of a tumor. Due to the discomfort and potential disability caused by sciatica, it often impairs one’s ability to go about their daily life.

Thankfully, most cases of sciatica are mild and will typically resolve over time without significant medical intervention. Recovery times range from as little as two weeks to as long as a year, with the average recovery period being about 12 weeks.

Traditional Treatments for Sciatica

Standard treatments for sciatica revolve around managing pain until the symptoms subside. If symptoms persist for longer than 12 weeks, surgery may be recommended, but surgery rarely yields results better than more conservative methods of care, and will often lead to problems such as motor weakness.

Treatment options for sciatica pain typically include analgesics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, chiropractic spinal manipulation, traction therapy and physical therapy, epidural steroid injections and acupuncture.

Many people only experience temporary bouts of mild sciatica pain or “flare-ups” and can get by with certain sciatica stretches or sciatica exercises at home for relief.

When all else fails, surgery for severe cases of sciatica is sometimes necessary after non-surgical treatments have been exhausted. Surgery usually involves removal of disc herniation or part of the disc, and sometimes a laminectomy, which removes a small portion of the vertebral bone (lamina) in order to relieve spinal nerve compression.

Despite the focus on pain management in treating sciatica, researchers have concluded that most traditional pain medications are largely ineffective, and often cause adverse side effects. Therefore, finding a safe, effective alternative is a top priority for medical professionals looking to help patients better manage sciatic pain.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the primary chemical constituents of the cannabis plant. Although CBD was discovered decades ago, it has only been in recent years that a growing body of evidence has emerged about its many potential therapeutic benefits.  This is mainly due to the legality of hemp stemming from the 2018 US Farm Bill.

Countless studies have suggested that CBD oil could play a role in the treatment of a broad range of psychological and physiological conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and inflammation.

In particular, CBD has been identified as the most viable cannabinoid for use in medical treatment, despite the fact that THC also has many documented health benefits. This is because CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning that it will not cause the intoxication or impairment that THC does.

Using CBD for Sciatica Treatment

While there is currently no known course of treatment that cures sciatica outright, there is ample evidence to suggest that CBD can help reduce pain until the symptoms of the condition subside.

Similarly to how CBD is used to treat the chronic pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, migraines, and fibromyalgia, it has also been shown to be effective at relieving neuropathic pain, which involves pain stemming from nerve damage.

Tessera Naturals cbd tincture and cbd pain cream. cbd oil for sciatica. cbd for hamstring pain. cbd for calf pain.

In fact, one study identified transdermal CBD as an effective agent for treating peripheral neuropathy, a condition closely related to sciatica which involves pain in the extremities.

Although hemp CBD oil is well-known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, its capacity to manage neuropathic pain is largely due to its antioxidant and anti-hyperalgesic (pain desensitizing) properties. A review examining multiple studies on CBD found that its use desensitized TRPV1 receptors, which have been connected to neuropathic pain caused by inflammation and nerve injury.

There are other natural compounds like capsaicin (the chemical found in chili peppers) that have a similar effect, but CBD was not shown to reduce pain in the manner that capsaicin often does. In addition, a study found that rats given daily doses of CBD had markedly reduced levels of enzymes in the blood that typically rise during inflammatory or neuropathic pain. The researchers inferred that part of this decrease was due to CBD’s antioxidant properties.

As of today, there is still limited research to support CBD’s viability as a sole clinical treatment for sciatica, but most of the evidence so far has been promising. Future studies are likely to uncover more about how CBD can be used to manage not only sciatica, but neuropathic pain in general.

How to Take CBD for Sciatica

According to the results of multiple studies, topical CBD and oral CBD are particularly effective at managing neuropathic pain. However, most studies using topical CBD involved pain confined to the extremities, sciatica often involves pain throughout the length of the leg, so it may require a considerable amount of a topical product to manage pain efficiently.

If pain is localized to a specific area, then transdermal CBD might be the desired route; otherwise, it is just as effective and much more efficient to consume CBD oil sublingually or inhale vaporized CBD. Ultimately, the method of administration comes down to personal preference and the amount of product available for use over an extended period.

CBD most likely not alleviate your pain by itself, but can be a powerful addition to your arsenal of sciatica treatments such as stretching and exercises.

Important Advice About Taking CBD Products

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CBD itself is safe and well-tolerated by humans even at large doses, but there are still some necessary precautions that must be taken before using any of the products available on the market.

First of all, CBD oil may have a number of mild side effects at higher doses, ranging from nausea, loss of appetite, drowsiness, and diarrhea. These side effects vary depending on the size of the dose and the route of administration. It’s also important to note that CBD could potentially interact with certain medications, so make sure to consult with your doctor before taking CBD to confirm that it’s safe for you to use.

Furthermore, it’s essential that you confirm the quality of a CBD product you are purchasing. Since CBD products are not regulated by the FDA, many of them will contain inaccurate concentrations of CBD and THC, and others will be plain unsafe to use due to containing harmful additives.

To avoid any of the consequences that come with using a low quality or unsafe CBD product, always confirm that the hemp used to make the product comes from a reputable source, ensure that the labeling is consistent and accurate, and check that the contents are tested and verified by an independent third party. Doing so will not only keep you safe, but it will also help you make the most out of your CBD product.

Why Tessera Naturals

Tessera Naturals is committed to providing the highest quality CBD oil in the industry with no gimmicks.  All products are made with THC free broad spectrum CBD oil, from organically grown USA hemp and are 3rd party tested to ensure potency and safety.

Can You Overdose on CBD? How Much is Too Much?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about CBD, and may have even tried it yourself.  Ever since hemp and hemp-derived products became federally legal due to the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD is now found everywhere from retail stores, to food establishments to bars serving CBD-infused cocktails

While there is new scientific and anecdotal evidence popping up daily about the benefits of CBD, many are still skeptical. Since CBD oil comes from the same plant that THC comes from, many are concerned about safety, if CBD is addictive, and wonder whether you can overdose on CBD.

Where Does CBD Come From?

CBD is one of the 100+ chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant.  Marijuana and hemp are two different varieties of cannabis and CBD can be extracted from either marijuana or hemp.

Since CBD is derived from hemp, which is a variety of the cannabis plant, many people wonder if CBD gets you high. Most of the CBD products on the market are derived from hemp, which only contains trace amounts of THC.  Consuming hemp-derived CBD, therefore, will not cause the intoxicating effects typically associated with marijuana, which has a high concentration of THC.

Is CBD Oil Safe?

In a 2017 report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that “CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile”.  But does that mean it’s completely safe at any amount with no side effects?  Not necessarily. Let’s explore some of the safety concerns with CBD.

Side Effects of CBD at Higher Doses

Just as taking too much ibuprofen or aspirin can have negative consequences, CBD is no different. There have been reports of some unpleasant side effects from consuming large quantities of CBD such as diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue.

That being said, most consumers are not taking high enough amounts to experience any of these effects.  Human and animal studies on the toxicity of CBD have researched extremely high doses of CBD, about 10 times the typical daily dose, to determine some of the undesirable results.

Asian man sitting on floor next to chair. what happens if you take too much cbd? is cbd addictive? can you overdose on CBD? is cbd dangerous? is cbd safe? ho much cbd should i take?

Is CBD Addictive?

The same WHO report also says that “There is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”  To date, there is no indication that hemp-derived CBD oil is either physically or psychologically habit-forming.

In fact, a 2015 study has suggested that CBD may be useful in the treatment of drug addiction. The review concluded that CBD may have therapeutic properties on opioid, cocaine, and psychostimulant addiction, and some preliminary data suggest that it may be beneficial in cannabis and tobacco addiction in humans.

Lastly, if you’re expecting some kind of psychoactive effect by taking CBD, you may be disappointed. While CBD can help promote a more relaxed mood, taking CBD doesn’t feel the same as consuming THC.

Can You Build Up a Tolerance to CBD?

While many marijuana users build up a tolerance to THC and its intoxicating effects, CBD works differently since it interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) in a different way.  In fact, you may say it’s quite the opposite, what’s known as “reverse tolerance”.

The main purpose of our ECS is to promote homeostasis and balance between our various bodily systems such as mood, sleep patterns, immune response.  THC inhibits the ECS by binding to the ECS receptors, leading to a decreased amount of cannabinoid production over time, which is why more THC is needed to achieve the same effects after repeated use.

CBD, on the other hand, enhances our ECS’s ability to work more effectively, thus promoting homeostasis.  This means that over time, lower quantities of CBD may be necessary to help achieve the same results.

Can You Overdose on CBD?

So, we’ve discussed how CBD is generally safe and non habit-forming. The question still remains… Can you overdose on CBD?  The short answer is no, there have not been any reported cases of CBD overdose.  Even for recreational and medicinal marijuana users, there are no known cases of fatal overdoses.  The National Institute of Drug Abuse has even coined the term Marijuana Use Disorder since there is still much debate about whether marijuana is technically addictive or not.

It’s safe to say that cannabis use, in general, has not resulted in any fatalities due to overdose.  Given that cannabis has been used for thousands of years, that pretty sums up that you can not overdose on CBD.

How Much CBD Should I Take?

Everyone is different when it comes to genetic makeup.  Finding the optimal dose of CBD requires some personal experimentation.

The first step is to visit our free CBD Dosage Calculator to determine a good starting point.  As we’ve said before, it will take some trial and error to settle on a dosage.  We recommend starting at the base level from the calculator results, then slowly increase over time until you experience its effects.

And remember, more isn’t always necessarily better. Some studies have suggested the CBD dosage works on a bell curve.  Taking more than the optimal dose may result in less effectiveness, let alone, be wasteful.

Where to Buy Safe CBD Oil?

While it seems to be the case that you cannot overdose on CBD, it’s important to use caution when you are purchasing CBD due to the unregulated nature of the industry.  We’ve seen this in the recent outbreak of lung injuries associated with the use of THC vaping products, which resulted in 50+ deaths.

Since CBD is still not regulated by the FDA, there are many illicit, untested, and often contaminated products on the market.  It’s important to purchase CBD products from a reputable source. High-quality CBD oil should be made in the USA from organically grown hemp and should be 3rd party tested to verify the safety and potency of the product.

Tessera Naturals’ mission is to promote a healthy lifestyle, which includes a clean diet, regular exercise, and plant-based supplements for total health and wellness. Tessera Naturals is committed to providing the very best CBD products on the market, and adhering to the latest protocols of quality manufacturing and safety.

CBD For Arthritis. Can CBD Oil Help With the Pain?

Arthritis is a debilitating condition that involves pain, inflammation, and impaired movement in the joints. Arthritis is among the leading causes of disability in the U.S., which often leads to unemployment and a severely diminished quality of life. Standard treatments for arthritis do exist, but they are typically very expensive, can have negative side effects, and are only successful at a moderate rate. The inadequacy of current methods has highlighted a need for improved and/or alternative routes of treatment for arthritis.

Fortunately, researchers have identified CBD as a prime candidate for treating arthritis in a safe, effective manner. CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive constituent of the cannabis plant, and has received a lot of attention in the medical field due to the many therapeutic benefits it provides.

Research on CBD as a treatment for arthritis is still in its early stages, but these preliminary results are extremely promising. In this article, we’re going to thoroughly discuss CBD as it relates to arthritis, including important advice and precautions one should know before thinking about using CBD as a way to deal with this debilitating condition.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of the major chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant known as cannabinoids, behind only THC in overall concentration. Both THC and CBD interact with the endocannabinoid system, which has been identified as having a significant influence over many important bodily functions, including osteoarthritis pain. Unlike THC, however, CBD is not psychoactive, meaning that its use will not lead to the intoxication characteristic of marijuana use. This fact has made CBD the more viable cannabinoid to use in treatment strategies for various conditions.

In particular, CBD has been noted for its ability to effectively treat physiological symptoms such as pain and inflammation, as well as psychological afflictions such as anxiety, insomnia, and stress. CBD’s broad areas of effect make it a promising compound for treating a variety of disorders, and especially in people with comorbidities (two or more existing medical conditions).

CBD is available in many different forms, all of which vary in their potency and unique benefits. These forms include oils, edibles, tinctures, and topical creams and ointments. This variety of options allows medical professionals to easily plan treatments for specific diseases, and also lets individuals choose the form that’s most comfortable for them to consume.

Facts About Arthritis

Arthritis can be a very painful condition characterized by inflammation or structure degradation in the joints. It is estimated that around 50 million Americans suffer from arthritis, with that number expected to rise to 67 million by 2030. While arthritis is most common among the elderly, it can still affect a noticeable percentage of the younger population.

There are over 100 different kinds of arthritis, but the most common variants are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, which entails a weakening of the bone, a loss of cartilage, and possibly a change in joint shape.

On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints. Researchers believe that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a persistent autoimmune response that leads to inflammation that centralizes in the joints.

hands holding a keen with animated bone structure. does cbd help for arthritis? cbd pain cream for arthritis. cbd cream for pain

Both of these conditions exhibit almost identical symptoms, but the different ways in which they arise will sometimes necessitate unique treatment strategies. Traditional drugs and topical applications are commonly used with both conditions, but a more targeted method such as immunosuppressive therapy is used specifically to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

However, many of these traditional methods come with serious side effects. In particular, immunosuppressive therapy can significantly increase the risk of infection due to weakened immune function, and can also cause heart failure.

Using CBD for Arthritis Treatment

Researchers believe that CBD for arthritis could be a powerful anti-arthritic compound because it has both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Although there have not been many studies examining the effects of CBD treatment on human arthritic patients, the results of multiple studies conducted using animal models suggest that CBD can effectively combat arthritis in ways that could potentially be replicated in humans.

In one study, researchers found that treating arthritic rats with transdermal CBD significantly reduced pain and inflammation in the joints. Another study conducted on mice found that the use of oral CBD effectively halted the progression of rheumatoid arthritis, most likely due to CBD’s ability to suppress inflammation and the immune response.

Even though these studies outline the promise of CBD in the treatment of arthritis, more research needs to be done on humans to conclusively say that CBD is a viable treatment option. However, although most studies to date have used animal models, the underlying biological processes are largely the same between species, which encourages the possibility that similar benefits will be seen in humans.

How to Take CBD for Arthritis

Since CBD is available in several formats, it can be used to manage arthritis in many of the same ways that standard treatments employ, which is a convenience to those who are already familiar with them. For example, arthritic patients commonly use pain creams or ointments to deliver pain-relieving medication directly to an affected area, and the same can be done with a CBD pain cream.

CBD oil can also be taken orally using a tincture or capsules in order to treat pain receptors from the inside. CBD’s effects are felt more quickly when using creams, while it takes longer to kick in if ingested orally. Since there is no standard procedure to treat arthritis using CBD, the manner of consumption ultimately comes down to preference.

As for CBD dosage, it is recommended to start with lower doses and then gradually work your way up in order to achieve the desired effect. CBD has been deemed to be safe and well-tolerated by humans even at extremely large doses by the World Health Organization, but smaller doses will often suffice. Starting small will also help you preserve your product for longer and avoid the negative side effects that are often associated with larger doses.

Use our free CBD Dosage Calculator to get a good starting point.

Precautions with Using CBD for Arthritis

As with taking any other substance, there are general precautions that must be heeded in order to ensure you minimize any risks and get the most out of your CBD product. For instance, CBD does have mild side effects which vary depending on dosage and route of administration.

Among these side effects are nausea, drowsiness, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Furthermore, CBD could potentially interact with various prescription or over-the-counter medications, some of which are commonly taken by people with arthritis. If you’re currently on any type of medication, it’s extremely important to seek counsel from your doctor before taking CBD.

Lastly, it is essential to ensure that your CBD product is high-quality. Since CBD products are not regulated by the FDA, there is no guarantee that everyone you come across will be effective, let alone safe to use.

There have been countless documented cases of CBD products containing harmful additives and inaccurately labeled concentrations of THC. To avoid this, make sure that your CBD product is made from all-natural hemp produced by a reputable supplier, check that the labeling is consistent and accurate, and confirm that the contents were lab-tested by an independent third party.

What Exactly Is THC Free CBD Oil?

There’s no question that the stigma around cannabis has been decreasing over the last decade or so.  That being said, there are many people who are interested in the health benefits of cannabis, but are afraid of the psychoactive effects associated with recreational marijuana, which is mainly due to the compound THC.

CBD is a compound in cannabis that has been getting a lot of attention lately, and rightfully so as CBD has many health benefits. Many people are seeking the best of both worlds with THC free CBD oil. Is that possible?

THC vs CBD

There are over 100+ chemical compounds found in cannabis called cannabinoids, each offering a variety of health benefits. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the cannabinoid responsible for making you “high”. CBD (cannabidiol) on the other hand, has been shown to provide a plethora of health and medical benefits, without the intoxicating effects typically associated with marijuana.

How Do Cannabinoids Work?

All humans and animals have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in our body. Only recently discovered in the 1990’s, the ECS is responsible for controlling various functions in our bodies such as appetite, mood, pain sensitivity, immune response and sleep patterns.

Through a series of receptors throughout our bodies, the core function of the ECS is to promote balance between all of these responses and to promote “homeostasis”. The ECS does this by producing chemical compounds called endo-cannabinoids, which are similar to neurotransmitters like serotonin or dopamine.

The ECS has been called perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Cannabinoids from plants (phyto-cannabinoids) can interact with our ECS and help it do its job more effectively.

Does THC Free CBD Oil Exist?

CBD comes in various forms, and it seems that every day there are new products on the market incorporating CBD for a variety of uses and purposes.

The three main types of CBD oil that is present in all of these products are:

1. Full Spectrum CBD

Refers to the whole plant hemp extract, which includes all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and amino acids from cannabis, including up to 0.3% of THC.

2. Broad Spectrum CBD

Starts with a full spectrum CBD that undergoes an additional process to remove that trace amount of THC.

3. CBD Isolate

Contains pure CBD only.  As a singular compound, it does not contain any of the other cannabinoids, terpenes or other natural compounds found in the whole plant extract.

As we see above, there are two forms of THC free CBD oil, but do they offer the same benefits?

Close up of gears. cbd entourage effect. thc free cbd oil. broad spectrum with minor cannabinoids. cbd isolate.

Broad Spectrum CBD vs CBD Isolate

As we’ve stated above, there are over 100 known cannabinoids besides THC and CBD.  Cannabis also contains terpenes, which have been shown to have health benefits of their own.  When consumed together, cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically and increase the beneficial properties of one another. This harmonious relationship is what is called the “entourage effect”.

Broad Spectrum CBD contains all of the beneficial minor cannabinoids and terpenes, but minus the THC, so it offers the same synergistic relationship and entourage effect as full spectrum CBD.

Many wonder if broad spectrum CBD is as effective as full spectrum CBD. It boils down to the question of whether CBD works without THC. The bottom line is that CBD can be very effective without THC. CBD does not “need” THC to work, or to “activate” the CBD as some have suggested. It all depends on the individual’s conditions, severity and genetics whether adding THC will help alleviate symptoms better than CBD alone.

Since CBD isolate does not contain any of the minor cannabinoids or terpenes, it does not offer the entourage effect at all.  Therefore, we feel that broad spectrum CBD is a far superior choice than CBD isolate.

Why Some People Should Avoid THC

Some people are extremely sensitive to THC and it can cause anxiety.  CBD is widely used to reduce anxiety, so any THC would be counterproductive.

Other people may have a job that requires them to get regularly drug tested, such as healthcare professionals, drivers or government employees.  While full spectrum CBD only contains less than 0.3% to be considered federally legal in the US, there is a chance that it may show up on a drug test depending on amount consumed and consistency of use.

Even though the stigma of cannabis is slowly dissipating, there are some that still hold cannabis in a negative connotation and would rather stay away from THC for personal or emotional reasons.

Lastly, there are some areas of the country that have very strict laws against THC.  Even though CBD derived from hemp is considered legal in all 50 states (as long as it stays under the 0.3% THC threshold), some local jurisdictions are still a grey area in terms of legal interpretation and enforcement. (CBD derived from Marijuana is still considered federally illegal.)

For these reasons, THC free CBD oil may be the best option to reap the benefits of cannabis (specifically hemp) without any of the potential legal risks or other “baggage” associated with THC.

Where to Buy THC Free CBD Oil

There are many places to buy CBD in all types and formats. Purchasing CBD oil online will give you the widest selection available as well as the convenience of shipping. Depending on where you live, there may be some local retailers that sell CBD products.  However, wherever you decide to purchase CBD, you must do your due diligence and know what to look for as not all CBD is created equal.

Any low priced CBD product you see at a gas station, convenience store or smoke shop will most likely be of poor quality and may not contain real CBD, if any at all.  They may also contain dangerous unsafe ingredients such as fillers, chemicals and pesticides.

Also, the “hemp” products you see on Amazon are most likely made with hemp seed oil, which does not contain CBD. They will not have CBD on the label, nor will they show any actual amount of CBD contents. As of this writing, Amazon’s policy does not allow any CBD products to be sold on their platform.

CBD Tinctures: Everything You Need to Know

CBD tinctures are the most commonly used CBD products. Tinctures provide a quick and easy alternative to methods of consuming CBD (cannabidiol) such as vaping and edibles.  If you’re brand new to CBD, we suggest reading our Beginner’s Guide to CBD.

Tinctures have an extensive history in herbalism and Western medicine, which makes CBD tinctures very promising. There are some important things to know about tinctures before you can start enjoying the full range of their benefits. In this article, we’ll dig deeper into what exactly is a tincture, as well as how to use them to optimum effect.

What are Tinctures?

Most people associate the word tincture with the little bottles of oil that contain a squeeze dropper, but the definition of a tincture is actually any solution that consists of a plant or animal extract which is dissolved or diluted in some kind of solvent.  The solvent breaks down the plant’s cell wall, releasing the active chemical compounds into the solution.

As with any herbal or essential oil tincture, there is also a carrier oil. A carrier oil acts as the delivery vehicle for the active compound. Carrier oils also dilute and preserve the highly concentrated compound and make it easier to absorb due to their fat content. Common carrier oils for CBD include MCT oil, olive oil, grape seed oil or hemp seed oil.

Tinctures have actually been in use for thousands of years. Their first recorded use was with the Ancient Egyptians, and they were a staple of Western medicine throughout the last 8 centuries. Tinctures were gradually replaced by pills, but they have seen a resurgence lately due to an increased awareness of herbalism and its many benefits.

Line up of antique medicine bottles. how to best use cbd. advantages of sublingual application. how to take cbd sublingually. are tinctures the best way to take cbd?

How to Use CBD Tinctures

Tinctures are very easy to use and require no extra equipment beyond the bottle and dropper. To apply a dose, simply squeeze the dropper while submerged in the oil and fill to the desired level.  Then drop the amount of CBD drops under the tongue. It is recommended to hold the solution under your tongue for 60 seconds or more to maximize absorption. Some people swish the oil around the inner cheeks for additional absorption before swallowing.

How to Calculate and Measure Dosage

Determining dosage is a common challenge when starting a CBD regimen.  It will require some trial and error to find the optimal dose of CBD for you based on many different factors, which we’ve covered in a previous blog post.

We’ve also created a CBD dosage Calculator for a recommended daily starting point based on weight, condition, and severity.  Every individual is different so it will inevitably require some experimentation to find your sweet spot.

To calculate how much CBD to consume with a CBD tincture, you must note the total CBD content (mg) in the bottle and the number of serving. For example, if your tincture has 1000 mg of CBD, and there are 30 servings (1 full dropper), then one dropper contains about 33mg.  Some companies suggest counting CBD drops in order to measure dosage, but we’ve created a simple diagram to calculate the various dropper amounts or each of our tinctures.

Diagram for CBD Tincture droppers. CBD dosage. How much cbd should I take? what is the right dose of cbd? how to calculate dose for CBD.

Again, when trying to figure out just how much CBD you should take, it will require some trial and error. We suggest starting with a low dose (10-15 mg of CBD) and see how you react. You can slowly increase the dose over the next few days to find the most effective dose for you and your goals.

Why Sublingual CBD Application is Effective

One of the main advantages of using tinctures is the ability to get a quick, effective dose of cannabidiol simply by applying the oil under your tongue. This method is a convenient and non-intrusive way to take your daily CBD dose, and typically only takes minutes to take effect. There are thin mucous membranes beneath the tongue that will quickly absorb any chemicals they come into contact with, and directly enter them into the bloodstream. As a result, sublingual administration is a much more efficient route as opposed to normal oral ingestion.

Using CBD Tinctures with Food/Beverages

CBD oil from tincture can also be easily applied to your favorite foods and beverages if you don’t like its taste, but this approach does come with some drawbacks. For one, CBD drops applied onto food or beverages will take longer for your body to absorb the CBD. Furthermore, oral ingestion lowers CBD’s bioavailability as it must be processed through the digestive system, meaning that a decreased amount of CBD will actually end up in your system.

How to Store CBD Tinctures

Tinctures have an incredibly long shelf life, so long as they are stored in dark ultraviolet-protective bottles and kept away from heat and light.

Although tinctures do not need to be refrigerated, they should be kept away from heat in a “cool” environment (ideally 60-70 degrees) to avoid degrading the cannabinoids as well as to maintain the viscosity of the oil.

Dark or opaque tincture bottles offer increased protection to light, and storing them in a dark place helps maximize their shelf life. All Tessera Naturals CBD Tinctures products are packaged in dark amber glass bottles for added protection.

In addition, most CBD tinctures will require an extra bit of care since they often contain a non-alcoholic solvent. Without the preservation that alcohol provides, tinctures have an increased risk of growing mold. To avoid this, make sure not to contaminate the bottle by touching the dropper with the mouth or any other surface.

Line of 4 Tessera Naturals tinctures on a shelf. which cbd tincture brands Are best? how to store cbd tinctures? do you have to refrigerate cbd tinctures? how long do cbd tinctures last? how much cbd should I take?

Make Sure You’re Using a Quality CBD Tincture!

When selecting a CBD tincture, it’s important to recognize the distinction between actual CBD oil and other “hemp oil” or hemp seed oil. Although they both come from the same plant, hemp seed oil lacks the many cannabinoids that provide a range of therapeutic effects. Hemp seed oil is particularly rich in omega fatty acids, but it won’t have much of an effect if used as a tincture for healing or therapeutic properties.

NOTE: The CBD oil products on Amazon are mostly likely hemp seed oil and do not contain any CBD at all.

Also, make sure you understand the amount of THC in the product and look for either full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD to get the maximum benefit of the entourage effect.

Lastly, make sure you are vetting the products you are buying to make sure they contain the best, high-quality CBD oil, from organically grown hemp, and do not contain harsh chemicals or solvents.  Review Certificate of Analysis (COA’s) to make sure you verify what’s in the bottle.

Tessera Naturals is committed to offering the highest quality premium grade Broad Spectrum CBD products on the market.  Made from USA organically grown non-GMO hemp, using a solvent-free extraction process, Tessera Naturals maintains a pure whole plant profile with 0% THC.  All products are 3rd party tested for safety and potency.

Key Takeaways

  • Tinctures include any solution that consists of an extract dissolved or diluted in alcohol/solvent and is contained in a carrier oil.
  • CBD Tinctures are best used to transfer CBD oil directly under the tongue for maximum absorption.
  • Using tinctures with food and drink is perfectly fine, but it’s more effective to apply the dose sublingually.
  • Calculate the dosage of tinctures by noting the total CBD content in the bottle, divided by the number of servings.
  • Store tinctures in a cool, dark place for maximum shelf life.
  • Make sure you are purchasing high-quality CBD tinctures from a reputable source.

Does CBD Work Without THC?

A recent wave of media attention for CBD, scientific studies, and anecdotal evidence has caused a surge of mainstream interest in cannabis.  As the popularity of cannabis, hemp and CBD has grown, there are still many questions and misunderstandings about the plant and its compounds, including does CBD work without THC (hint… yes).

Here we will dive into this common question, and look at whether THC is even necessary at all to make CBD more effective.

A Refresher on CBD and THC

CBD, short for “cannabidiol”, is one of 113+ chemical compounds uniquely found in cannabis.  While THC is the most famous cannabinoid for its intoxicating effects, CBD offers many health benefits but does not cause the psychoactive “high” often associated with cannabis. These compounds, along with other aromatic chemicals called terpenes, have many known medicinal benefits.

There are two different varieties of the cannabis plant, marijuana and hemp.  CBD can be derived from either marijuana or hemp. While marijuana is bred for its high concentration of THC, hemp has only trace amounts of THC, but has a high concentration of CBD.  Most of the CBD products you see on the market today are derived from hemp.

Beaker of CBD crude oil in extraction lab. what is broad spectrum cbd? what is the difference between full spectrum cbd and broad spectrum cbd? what is the difference between full spectrum cbd and cbd isolate? how much cbd should i take? where to buy broad spectrum cbd? does cbd work without thc?

When CBD oil is extracted from hemp, it will contain mainly CBD, but will also have the trace amount of THC, as well as other minor cannabinoids and terpenes found in the plant.  This is what is known as a full spectrum CBD extract.

Tessera Naturals offers broad spectrum CBD, which takes the full spectrum extract and selectively removes the THC, while still maintaining the rest of the spectrum of minor cannabinoids and terpenes.

Does CBD Alone Work?

As more and more research emerges, there are literally thousands of studies on CBD pointing to its efficacy on its own.

A clinical trial published in May of 2017 tested the effects of CBD for the debilitating epileptic condition, Dravet’s Syndrome. The trial discovered that CBD alone reduced seizures by half in 43% of patients who were given the medication.

In June of 2018, the FDA approved a CBD-only medication called Epidiolex, predominantly for these seizure cases.

THC free CBD oil is also being considered as a natural holistic alternative treatment for many other conditions such as pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, diabetes, neurological disorders, auto-immune deficiencies and addiction treatment.

Is Combining Cannabinoids Better than Isolating them?

When consuming various cannabinoids together, it promotes what is known as the “entourage effect” benefiting our endocannabinoid system better than isolated cannabinoids.  The various cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically, enhancing each other’s properties and creating a 1 + 1 = 3 scenario.

Scientist with latex gloves holding vials of cannabinoids. does CBD need THC to work better? doe thc activate cbd? does cbd counteract thc? where to buy broad spectrum cbd. where to buy thc free cbd oil?

When it comes to specifically including THC as part of the extract, some studies have shown THC and CBD work better together (along with other minor cannabinoids and terpenes). In more severe cases it may be best if you use a product that combines CBD and THC, and some will argue that consuming them together is the best method.

That being said, many conditions respond well to CBD alone, so for many people, THC-free CBD has great benefits and may be all that you need. It all depends on the individual, your overall health and what symptoms you’re trying to treat.

Reasons to Avoid THC?

There are benefits from both THC and CBD.  As we’ve stated above, THC is not needed to activate CBD as some have suggested, but in some cases a combination of both THC and CBD may be a more effective treatment.

That being said, there are many reasons why some may want to (or need to) avoid THC in their CBD products. For example, in some states and jurisdictions, THC is still illegal, even in the trace amounts found in hemp, even though CBD is federally legal according to the 2018 US farm bill.

There are also physical and emotional reasons to avoid THC as well. If you’re someone who has had negative experiences with THC in the past and/or is prone to anxiety, paranoia, or other conditions that might be aggravated by the psychoactive cannabinoids, then a THC-free CBD products may be the best option for you.

If you’re using CBD to treat conditions that THC can sometimes worsen for some people (such as anxiety), you should choose a THC-free option to avoid having the opposite of your desired effects.

Again, you do not need THC to use CBD. CBD can work great by itself, and even better in combination with other non psychoactive cannabinoids and terpenes found in hemp, minus the THC (broad spectrum CBD).

A Word on CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate is a singular extracted compound that contains pure CBD only. CBD isolate may be a good choice for those seeking extremely high doses of CBD, or for those seeking relief from conditions that only CBD can provide.

Other than those rare cases, it’s been shown that CBD isolate is not as effective as full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD as it lacks the many benefits that the amazing hemp plant provides, specifically with combining the minor cannabinoids and terpenes.

We feel that nature knows best and that it’s always better to consume products that contain raw ingredients as close to their natural unaltered state as possible.

Close up of hemp leaf. is thc necessary for cbd products to work? does cbd and thc work better together? is broad spectrum cbd just as good as full spectrum cbd? is full spectrum cbd better than cbd isolate?

What About CBD Dosing?

When it comes to dosing CBD, there is much confusion as there is no standard recommended dose as of yet.  CBD is very individualistic and some are more sensitive to its effects than others. How much CBD you should take also depends on various factors such as weight, lifestyle, symptoms, severity, etc.

An interesting study referenced by Project CBD, point to one very important take-away – CBD Isolate vs. full spectrum CBD states that CBD on it’s own works on a bell-curve, while full-spectrum CBD works on a linear scale.

In other words, more is not better with isolated CBD products.  There is a sweet-spot on dosing and it may stop working as effectively if you take too much. If you’re using a full-spectrum CBD products derived from cannabis containing THC, more may be better.

In the end, even though you can’t really overdose on CBD, each consumer will need to experiment until they find the most effective does for them and their symptoms.

Visit our free online CBD dosage calculator to help you get a good starting point by entering your weight, condition and severity.

So Does CBD Work Without THC?

As we’ve seen, CBD can be effective is various formats, from full spectrum, broad spectrum and even CBD isolate in certain cases. Bottom line is that CBD will work without THC. CBD does not “need” THC to work, but it all depends on the individual’s conditions, severity and genetics.

Each person will need to experiment with the various forms of CBD to find the right product for them. If they live in a state which allows medicinal and/or recreational marijuana, they may even want to try a higher THC product to see if it alleviates their symptoms more effectively than CBD oil.

Key Takeaways

  • Cannabis contains 113+ cannabinoids and terpenes that work synergistically together for enhanced benefits.
  • THC is not needed to “activate” CBD as some have suggested.
  • There may be some symptoms where having a small amount of THC will work better than CBD alone, but not for the majority of cases.
  • Some may need to avoid THC for legal, physical or emotional reasons.
  • Full spectrum CBD and broad spectrum CBD are more effective than CBD isolate due to the entourage effect.
  • Each person will need to experiment to learn which product is best for them and their individual needs to determine whether or not CBD works without THC for them.

Can You Buy CBD Oil on Amazon? (Hint…no!)

While many people say they buy their CBD oil on Amazon, what they probably don’t realize is that they may not be getting any actual CBD at all.

According to Amazon’s own policy, Amazon does not sell CBD hemp oil as CBD products are prohibited on their platform. So why then, if you search for CBD oil on Amazon, you’ll see thousands of hemp products listed? Upon closer look, you’ll notice they’re all labeled “hemp oil” or “hemp extract” or something similarly vague.

What is Hemp Oil?

These “hemp oil” products are most likely made from hemp seed oil. While Hemp seed oil has many benefits, it does not contain any significant amounts of CBD. They will not list “CBD” on the label, nor will they list any amount of actual CBD contents.

While some CBD companies may have decided to strip their label of mentioning “CBD” in order to get listed on Amazon, and the products may in fact contain some CBD… you won’t know how much, if any, it actually contains.

Unfortunately, by Amazon allowing these search results to be associated with CBD, we feel it is very misleading and is compromising the safety of consumers as well as wasting their money!

What’s Wrong with Amazon? Why Won’t They Allow CBD Oil Products?

Nothing is wrong with Amazon… We love Amazon!  Our family receives packages almost daily on our doorstep from Amazon… sometimes we forget what we ordered so it feels like Christmas every day!

Why else do we love Amazon?  Like most people do, whenever we’re out shopping for a product in the real world, we often pull out our phones and check it on Amazon, both for price competitiveness and also to read the reviews.

When it comes to CBD though…Amazon has a strict stance against it.  Even though CBD derived from hemp is federally legal according to the 2018 US Farm Bill as long it contains less than 0.3% THC, Amazon has taken the position to ban all cannabis derived products due to the unregulated nature of the industry.

We completely understand their decision and their need to avoid the risk of some sellers not complying with the farm bill regulations. Amazon has no way of fully ensuring that the CBD products have less than 0.3% THC.

Lastly, Amazon is a global company, and with cannabis laws still in flux in many parts of the world, and even varying from state to state in the US, so by allowing CBD oil on Amazon, it would be too difficult for them to navigate the legal and political waters around cannabis derived products at this time.

So, is There Any CBD Oil Amazon Does Carry?

While there may be some legitimate Amazon CBD products, you really don’t know what you’re getting so we would highly advise against purchasing CBD oil on Amazon until they have a process of vetting manufacturers and making sure the products are in compliance with all the legal restrictions around CBD.

Where Should You Buy CBD Oil?

Similar to our suggestion to not buy CBD oil on Amazon, please do not buy CBD products from your local vape shop or gas station!

Unfortunately, due to the lack of FDA regulation on CBD, there is a lot of misinformation out there as well as a lot of junk products… so doing your due diligence is important.

To purchase high-quality CBD products, you need to find a reputable company that can provide 3rd party lab tests to verify the potency and safety of their products.  Also, look for actual contents of CBD (cannabidiol) on the package as well as in the ingredients panel that specifies the “per serving” amount. You should also seek companies that create CBD using organically grown hemp in the USA and who use CO2 extraction process.
